Attending it were Paek Yong Ho, vice-chairman of the National Peace Committee of Korea, and members of the committee, researchers of the International Affairs Institute and the Disarmament and Peace Institute of the DPRK and figures of all social standings including social scientists.

The seminar heard speeches made on a series of issues including the historical development of the movement for disarmament and its urgency, the issue of raising the function and role of the UN and the Geneva disarmament conference in dealing with the issue of disarmament, efficiency and limitations of international treaties and agreements on disarmament, the issue of disarmament at present, nuclear disarmament in particular, the issue of realizing a comprehensive and total elimination of nuclear weapons from the earth and the matter of ensuring peace and security in the Korean Peninsula and the rest of Northeast Asia.

The speakers said that if the UN is to creditably perform its function and role in the field of disarmament it is necessary to reform its Security Council in a more democratic way and improve the activities of its first committee specializing in disarmament and the world's biggest nuclear weapons states should take the lead in materializing disarmament, nuclear disarmament in particular.

It is important to hold in check the U.S. moves for building a missile shield as it may trigger off new arms race and put an end to the arms sale of the West including the U.S. as it is major source of worldwide conflict and escalated tension, they added.

They underlined the need to force the hostile forces to roll back their policies of antagonizing the DPRK and remove their nuclear threat and pressurize the U.S. forces to pull back from south Korea and its vicinity, stop all forms of war exercises for aggression there and replace the Armistice Agreement with a peace accord in order to rid the Korean Peninsula of the danger of a war and realize disarmament and ensure peace and security there.
