Pyongyang, November 14 (KCNA) -- The Central Botanical Garden called magazine of vegetation is located at the foot of picturesque Mt. Taesong in Pyongyang. The botanical garden with 50-year-long history covers several hundreds of hectares. It has the International Friendship Greenhouse, the Plant Museum, districts for gift plants, gift fruit-bearing trees, garden and scenic forest, vegetation and for introducing plants of economic value, arboretum, herbary and others. Thousands of species of gift plants presented to President Kim Il Sung and General Secretary Growing in the greenhouse of Plant Museum, a leading base for disseminating plant knowledge, are more than 1,000 tropical plants of over 260 species. Over 10,000 trees of 128 species take roots in well-arranged arboretum and medicinal herbs of some 400 species in the herbary. The botanical garden serves as a breeding farm of Kimilsungia and Kimjongilia, the flowers praising the great men. It has researched and completed the tissue culture method of the immortal flowers and succeeded in nursing Kimjongilia on open-air garden in the northern area of Korea like Taehongdan. The Kimilsungia Hothouse under the botanical garden has propagated 80,000-odd Kimilsungia plants to nearly 1,500 units of Korea and hundreds of Kimilsungia plants to over 30 countries for the last 20-odd years. It was not long before that the botanical garden started to cultivate Kimjongilia. But it has rapidly spread the flower to more than 20 countries, to say nothing of Korea. Scientists in the districts for garden and scenic forest, vegetation and for introducing plants of economic value have deepened researches into the trees of economic value to increase their species, raise their productivity and widely propagate them to the whole country. The Central Botanical Garden is strengthening scientific and technological exchange with botanical gardens in all provinces of Korea and some 100 botanical gardens of foreign countries, thus making a positive contribution to turning the country into wooded gardens and forests. |
