DPRK Contribute to Navigation Safety and Maritime Environment Protection
Pyongyang, November 30 (KCNA) -- The head of the DPRK delegation, addressing the 26th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly on Nov. 24, said that the DPRK government would further develop the relations of friendship and cooperation with the IMO and all its member states in conformity with the consistent idea of foreign policy of independence, peace and friendship in the future, too, and make positive contribution to the international efforts for navigation safety and maritime environmental protection.

The DPRK, as a member state of the IMO, is taking an active part in its activities and channeling big efforts into the development of the country's sea transportation for the building of an economic power, he noted, and went on:

The DPRK government has conducted the work of revising domestic legislations related to maritime affairs with emphasis on increasing technical conditions of ships and seamen's technical knowledge and skills for ensuring personal safety at sea and navigation safety as required by the international conventions and norms related to maritime affairs, and intensifying supervision and control over them.

It has also pushed ahead with the work to improve maritime search and rescue operations and introduce the long-distance identification and tracking system into ships, regarding it as a major task.

As a result, a ship supervision and control center was established to carry out this task and preparations for putting its operation on a normal basis are near completion.

Special attention is being paid to maritime environmental protection and legal and administrative measures have been taken pursuant to the state policy of environmental protection and national legislation.

During the session, the DPRK acceded to various conventions related to maritime environmental protection and navigation safety.

These activities of the DPRK would make positive contributions to the efforts of the international community to ensure the safety and security of sailing in clean ocean and increase the efficiency.
