Signal Successes Made by Sportspersons

Pyongyang, December 26 (KCNA) -- Sportspersons of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have proved successful at international tournaments in the year of Juche 98 (2009). The DPRK team earned a ticket for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in last June, demonstrating the ever-growing might of the Korean footballers and delighting all the people of the country. For the excellent result beyond expectations of football experts and fans all over the world, the Asian Football Confederation conferred the prize of the best football association (for men) to the Korean Football Association in the annual awarding ceremony held some time ago. In wrestling, gymnastic, judo, weightlifting and other international tournaments, many DPRK athletes have won gold medals. Yang Kyong Il placed the first at the 55kg freestyle wrestling category of the 2009 World Wrestling Championship held in Denmark. Hong Un Jong and Pak Hyon Suk, Olympic gold medalists, won the women's vaulting horse event at the 25th Universiad and the women's 63kg weightlifting category at the 5th East Asian Games respectively. Rim Yun Hui came first at the women's 57kg category of the 2009 Asian Judo Championship to win the prize for the best player and Kim Kuk Hyang bagged three gold medals in the women's above 69 kg category of the 1st World Juvenile Weightlifting Championships. Ko Hyon Suk garnered two gold, one silver and one bronze medals at the 3rd "Challenger Cup" International Speed Skating Tournament. Taekwon-Do players who had distinguished themselves in international Taekwon-Do games displaying the wisdom and spirit of the Korean nation won three trophies, 19 gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals, thus coming first in the team standings at the 16th World Taekwon-Do Championships. Similar successes have been gained at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup, 2009 Asian Wrestling Championships, 1st Asian Youth Games and other international games, fully displaying the dignity of the Kim Il Sung nation and the might of Songun Korea. |
