Natural Wonders on Mt. Paektu
Pyongyang, January 2 (KCNA) -- There were natural wonders on Mt. Paektu Friday morning.

According to the Group for Comprehensive Exploration of Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu, myriads of natural wonders could be seen on peaks of Mt. Paektu, the side of Lake Chon and in the sky over the mountain.

The northwestern wind over 50 meters per second gradually lost its force from early in the morning of the New Year's Day, weather getting windless and calm.

The temperature on Mt. Paektu where an unusually biting cold had persisted registered 30 degrees C. below zero, relatively mild temperature as compared with ordinary one in this area. The sky was unusually clear with twinkling stars.

The sky of Mt. Paektu was bright with full moon till the dawn of the day, the visibility registering 10 meters.

Venus called "Saeppyol" shed exceptionally bright rays over Lake Chon at sunrise.

The sound of ice breaking on the lake resounded in the old crater, breaking the silence early morning.

Such big noise continued from 5 a.m. to 8 due to the difference between the atmospheric temperature and water temperature under the ice.

The majestic sunrise began at 7:38 and 216 peaks of the mountain presented fantastic scenery.

As there came strong wind from around 9 a.m., avalanche of hundreds of cubic meters rushed down to the lakeside from the peaks including Janggun Peak, Hyangdo Peak and Haeppal Peak.

Hot vapor was seen rising from the hot spring on the lakeside.
