Kimchol Takes Lead in Increased Production Movement

Pyongyang, January 22 (KCNA) -- The workers of the Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex (Kimchol) are taking the lead in the efforts to glorify this year that marks the 65th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea as a year of proud victory to be recorded in the history of the country. From a historical point of view they have steadfastly defended the leader and the Party with increased steel production in each rigorous period of the revolution, making a tangible contribution to the building of an independent national economy and socialist construction. Just after the liberation of the country, they restored the severely destroyed furnace and coke oven in a short period of time with their own effort and technology and produced more pig iron than the record high in the years of the Japanese imperialists' rule over the country, thus contributing to the building of a new country. In the postwar period of a great Chollima upswing they made such a world-startling miracle as producing 270,000 tons of pig iron from a blast furnace with a rated capacity of 190,000 tons to fully display the mettle of the Korean people. With such gigantic steel producers as Kimchol, the country could greet a heyday in economic construction in the 1970s and 1980s. They also boosted production in the "Arduous March", forced march, with indomitable faith and in the spirit of self-reliance. In spite of so many difficulties, they have established a new pig iron-making system totally based on local raw materials and fuel and their own technology, updated its continuous roughing machine by themselves and laid a solid foundation for putting such major processes as concentrates transport and hot rolling at full capacity. The Kimchol workers have effected an unprecedented upswing in steel production to support the major sectors of the people's livelihood improvement after General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the complex in last December to encourage it to stand in the van of this year's drive. |
