When Koguryo built the walled city of Pyongyang in the middle of the 6th century, the gate was erected. Afterwards, it was restored or rebuilt time and again, finally in 1473.

The gate consists of an embankment built with trimmed granites and a gatehouse on it.

The high embankment and arch 4.4 meters wide and 4.55 meters high show the excellent masonry of ancestors.

The gate, considered to be one of the eight beautiful sights of Pyongyang from ancient times, has been preserved well thanks to the national cultural heritage preservation policy of the Workers' Party of Korea.
