Pyongyang, April 20 (KCNA) -- Mt. Jongbang, one of the beauty spots in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is standing in the northern suburbs of Sariwon City, North Hwanghae Province. Many years ago, President Kim Il Sung climbed the mountain with various species of flowers and trees growing thickly and many kinds of birds and animals dwelling. In the mountain he found magnolia and suggested that it be the national flower of the DPRK. Mt. Jongbang, 481 meters in height, is surrounded by lower mountains and Pongsannamuri, Hwangjugindung, Jaeryong and other plains. It, with wonderful peaks, over-100-meter-high mysterious cliffs, falls, legend-rich mineral springs and the like, presents a picturesque landscape. There is a 12-kilometer-long fort in the mountain. It, erected in the period of Koryo (918-1392), has been known as the strongest one in the area of Hwanghae Province. Among the historic relics of the mountain are the fort's Nam Gate with a one-storied large tower, Songbul Temple built in 898 and five-storied quadrangular stone pagoda. There is also a scorpion habitat registered as a natural monument in the mountain. The mountain attracts many people, including overseas Koreans and foreigners. |
