Kim Jong Il first went round the Victorious Battle of Pochonbo Memorial Tower standing at the foot of Koekungjong Hill in Hyesan.

After watching the group sculptures of the tower with the statue of President Kim Il Sung in the centre and the monument to his revolutionary exploits, he said that Kim Il Sung was an invincible and iron-willed commander, outstanding strategist and peerlessly great man, indeed. The exploits performed by Kim Il Sung for the liberation of the country will always be remembered by our people, he added.

He then provided field guidance to the Hyesan Steel Works.

After being briefed on the steel works before a huge map showing its panoramic view, he went round various production processes including the steel shop and the rolling shop. He expressed great satisfaction over the fact that the workers of the works put the production on a high level by firmly establishing the steel production system of Korean style by their own efforts and with their own technology under the hard conditions where everything was in short supply.

He set forth tasks to be fulfilled by the works to develop it under a long-term plan.

He then provided field guidance to the Hyesan Footwear Factory.

After walking round the room devoted to the history of the factory, he visited various shops including the cutting shop and the sewing shop to acquaint himself with its technological equipment and production there.

Seeing a variety of quality shoes produced by the technologically updated production processes, he said that it was very gratifying for the officials, workers and technicians of the factory to mass-produce a variety of quality winter shoes including cotton-padded high boots and supply them to people in the province.

He set forth the tasks to be fulfilled by the factory.

He provided field guidance to the Kim Jong Suk University of Education.

He looked round the room devoted to the history of the university, conducted by its leading officials.

Saying that the graduates from the university have played a key role in the field of education, he expressed great satisfaction over the fact that the university has performed a vanguard role in the drive for developing the most advantageous educational system in the country by training many able teachers with strong revolutionary spirit and high qualifications. He highly appreciated the feats performed by the teachers and students of the university for the Party and the revolution, the country and its people.

He then looked round various places of the university including the room for the study of the educational methods to learn in detail about how education is conducted.

Watching all upbringing and educational facilities and campus kept in good order, he expressed great satisfaction over the fact that the university has trained its students as comprehensively qualified teachers after creating good environment for education. He highly estimated the feats performed by the teaching staff of the university.

He advanced tasks to be fulfilled by the university.

He met the educators of the university who rendered distinguished services for the country's development of education by devoting all their wisdom and energies to educating students for years and warmly encouraged them. He had a photograph taken with them.

He toured Hyesan City, setting forth the tasks for its construction.

It is of weighty importance for adding shine to the Party's glorious revolutionary traditions to spruce the city up well, the gateway to Mt. Paektu, he noted, specifying the orientation and ways to carry out the city construction under a long-term plan.

He was accompanied by Kim Hi Thaek, chief secretary of the Ryanggang Provincial Committee of the WPK, Secretary Kim Ki Nam, Department Directors Kim Kyong Hui and Jang Song Thaek, First Vice Department Directors Ju Kyu Chang and Ri Je Gang of the WPK Central Committee, Hyon Chol Hae and Ri Myong Su, department directors of the NDC.
