Pyongyang, May 19 (KCNA) -- Students and members of different organizations in various parts of south Korea staged the May 18 grand march for independent reunification in Kwangju on May 16 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Kwangju Popular Uprising. The participants declared they would certainly judge the present "government" and the "Grand National Party's" policy against democracy and reunification by inheriting the spirit displayed by the participants in the Kwangju resistance. On the same day members of civic and public organizations including the Solidarity for Progress and students organizations also held a people's rally for inheriting the May 18 spirit in Kwangju. If the people pool their efforts, they can hold in check the absolute rule of the present regime and achieve social democracy, the speakers at the rally said, calling for judging the group of traitors in the "elections to the local self-governing bodies." On May 15 a workers rally commemorating the 30th anniversary of the May 18 Kwangju resistance was held in Kwangju with the attendance of more than 15,000 unionists including those of the Government Employees' Union. Speakers at the rally charged that the authorities' suppression of the labor movement has gone beyond the tolerance limit these days, expressing the will to fight against the dictatorial regime in the spirit displayed by the Kwangju uprisers. Members of different organizations and Kwangju citizens held a meeting on the same day, calling for actions for achieving social democracy. |
