In a statement he noted that the publication of the June 15 joint declaration was a historic event which brought about an epochal turn in the reunification movement of the Korean nation.

The joint declaration serves as a cornerstone for the improvement of the inter-Korean relations and a great programme for reunification of Korea as it clarifies the fundamental principles and practical ways for national reconciliation, unity and reunification, he said, and went on:

The idea of "By our nation itself", basic spirit of the joint declaration, calls on the north and the south of Korea to solve the issue of reunification free from outsiders' interference.

The adoption of the October 4 declaration, a programme for implementing the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration, opened up a brighter prospect for the reunification movement of the Korean nation.

He expressed belief that the Korean people under the wise leadership of Kim Jong Il would surely achieve independent and peaceful reunification of the country under the banner of the June 15 joint declaration.
