Story of Kim Il Sung

Pyongyang, August 3 (KCNA) -- One day in August Juche 39 (1950), the Cabinet of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea had a conference. Put on the agenda of the conference was an issue of sending firewood to Seoul citizens for winter on the motion of President Kim Il Sung. When the agenda was introduced, the participants in the conference were surprised by the unexpected agenda as the country was in the thick of the war and August was one of the hottest months in Korea. Until then, Seoul citizens had lacked firewood in winter, so anything available for cooking and heating had been burnt, including wardrobe, laundry paddle and even dinner table. Nevertheless, some of them died with cold. The President told the conference that as Seoul had come under the control of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, its citizens should not be left to continue suffering from the lack of firewood and that the issue of firewood should be solved for them in a foresighted way. He said Mt. Thaebaek was suitable for firewood gathering because the wooded mountain was not far from Seoul, but, in that case, the toilsome work should be done by Seoul people themselves. He then chose Mt. Solak connected with the upper stream of the Han River, saying people in the northern half of the country should undertake the work for their compatriots in Seoul. He also indicated ways of sending firewood through the river to suit the wartime conditions. After the conference, logs as much as hundreds of thousands of cubic meters were cut and sent to Seoul through the Han River by a unit of the Korean People's Army so that Seoul citizens could spend that winter in their warm houses. The story of Mt. Solak is still told in south Korea. |
