Okryu Restaurant, Pride of Pyongyang

Pyongyang, August 10 (KCNA) -- Okryu Restaurant, the pride of Pyongyang, will shortly mark the 50th anniversary of its foundation. The restaurant has earned fame as the grand public service center strong in national flavor since it sprang up on the bank of the picturesque River Taedong on August 13, Juche 49 (1960) covered with Korean-style crane-shaped roof. A total of more than 68.8 million people from all walks of life across the country came to it and relished Pyongyang cold noodle, the nation's specialty, and sturgeon and terrapin dishes and other rare famous dishes during the past five decades, enjoying the benefits under socialism. The restaurant turned into the best public catering service center as its buildings are made formative and artistic and its service facilities are put on a peculiarly modern basis and it is equipped with best conditions for convenience. Its daily accommodation increased twenty times as compared with that soon after its foundation. The restaurant is becoming all the more popular for the peculiar flavor of national dishes getting stronger along with its magnificent appearance. Tray-noodle with minced meat made new appearance as a peculiar national dish as good as Obuk (flesh of the cow belly) tray-noodle which was served only at the royal palace in the olden days and it is very popular. The restaurant served 500 trays of noodle a day just after its inauguration but now the number reached more than 10,000 as it is deluged with an increasing number of people everyday for its matchless delicacies. Thousands of Korean dishes are cooked at the restaurant as a result of which it became popular as the best national dishes restaurant. All sorts of dainties served at this restaurant are adding to the pleasure of the people together with Pyongyang cold noodle. There appeared rooms specially serving quail dishes at the restaurant in September last year to be followed by sturgeon aquariums and terrapin feeding ground. People are served with 40 kinds of sturgeon and salmon dishes and varieties of other rare dishes. From February this year specially-prepared terrapin dishes efficacious for health and longevity are served with mild liquors of famous brand produced at the Taedonggang Foodstuff Factory, conspicuously adding to the flavor. The speciality foods annexe of Okryu Restaurant is taking shape with each passing day on the bank of the River Taedong. Its completion will make it possible for Okryu Restaurant to serve all sorts of delicacies including traditional national dishes, famous dishes and all kinds of drinks. |
