Masters of Koryo Celadon

Pyongyang, September 2 (KCNA) -- U Chi Son and Im Sa Jun were masters of Koryo celadon in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. They, crowned with Kim Il Sung Prize and the title of People's Artist, made a great contribution to reviving the world-famous Koryo celadon and putting the ceramic technique of Korea on a higher level. U Chi Son was born of a peasant family in Kangnam County, North Hwanghae Province in November 1919 and died in November 2003. He began making ceramics in his childhood and became a professional ceramist after the liberation of the country on August 15, 1945. His typical ceramics are chrysanthemum-patterned celadon pot (1964), sunflower-inlaid flower vase (1978), flower vase patterned with scenery of Pyongyang (1980), gourd-shaped kettle patterned with clouds and cranes (1988) and dinner set patterned with clouds and cranes (1997). His makings are recognized as priceless treasures in China, Japan and other countries for their sedate and beautiful colors, refined shapes and unique decorations. Im Sa Jun (August 1921-April 2007) had engaged himself in ceramics from the age of fourteen. His masterpieces are cinnabar small bowl (1960), grape-patterned flower vase (1972), flower vase patterned with reeds and ducks (1984) and dinner-set patterned with pine tree and crane (1997). They, with strong frames and varied patterns, give emotional feelings. They worked with the Porcelain Creative Group of the Mansudae Art Studio under the care of President Kim Il Sung and General Secretary Kim Jong Il. |
