Kyongwon County Lush with Trees
Pyongyang, September 3 (KCNA) -- Kyongwon County of North Hamgyong Province, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is thick with trees.

High poplars are growing densely along the Tuman River, mountains and hills are thickly covered with wood and factories, farms, streets, villages and all other places of the county sheltered by foliage.

The people of the county have made strenuous effort to bring about a great change in afforestation, true to the intention of the Workers' Party of Korea to turn the country into a woodland and greenery.

After launching a tree planting campaign with sixteen poplar twigs of a new species some two decades ago, the county built a tree nursery covering over 30 hectares, giving priority to cultivating saplings.

The county produced more than 100,000 saplings in Juche 90 (2001) and, since then, 200,000-300,000 every year to plant along roads, in compounds of industrial establishments and schools and in mountains and hills.

New species of trees have also been planted in some 400 hectares along the River Tuman.

Meanwhile, a tree-tending system has been set up on a mass scale to keep them from any damage.

As the result, the county has turned into a picturesque land and enjoyed benefits from the trees with poplars used as paper material.

Poplar growing in the county is called Kyongwon Poplar. It has been propagated throughout the country.
