Crackdown on Peace Movement under Fire in S. Korea

| Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- The Youth and Students Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 Joint Declaration in south Korea released a statement on Dec. 30 last year. It denounced the puppet authorities for cracking down upon the struggle against the building of a naval base on Jeju Island. The statement accused the police of arresting on Dec. 27 dozens of members of civic and social organizations and inhabitants critical of the above-said project and perpetrating violence against the participants in a sit-in strike, wounding several of them. It charged that actions were launched against the project because it is a serious factor of not only polluting environment and putting the right to existence at peril but also threatening peace on the Korean Peninsula. It demanded the authorities immediately halt the project. |
