Common Interests, Starting Point of Inter-Korean Dialogue

Pyongyang, January 25 (KCNA) -- It is the consistent stand of the DPRK to meet the interests of all Koreans by promoting reconciliation and confidence between the north and the south and ensuring a peaceful settlement of the country's reunification issue through dialogue and cooperation, according to a bylined article of Rodong Sinmun Tuesday. The inter-Korean dialogue is a prerequisite for resolving important matters of the nation and its common interests are essential precondition for resuming the stalled talks, said the article. The north and the south should prioritize their common interests such as the peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and the reunification of the country. Only then can they restart the dialogue and achieve the expected success, it said, adding: Foreign forces are getting serious in the efforts to meet their own interests, taking advantage of the complicated north-south relations. The reality calls on both sides to approach all the issues with reason and responsibility with the destiny of the nation into consideration. To put the interests of a specified class or social stratum above those of the nation will never help solve any issue arising in the north-south relations. Instead, this will jeopardize the destiny of the nation in the end. It is proved by the confrontation between the north and the south that has escalated during the last three years, leading the situation to the brink. To realize the north-south dialogue at present, it is necessary to remove the misunderstanding and distrust contrary to it, to begin with, and take the stand of giving top priority to the common interests of the nation. The north-south dialogue can develop into genuine one based on respect and trust in each other only when the north and the south put their common interests above all. There is no reason whatsoever for south Korea not to accept the DPRK's sincere proposal for dialogue if it acts with reason in the common interests of the nation. The destiny of the north-south relations entirely depends on the attitude of the south Korean authorities. |
