The work underscores the need to found a unified state, independent, peaceful and neutral, with concerted effort of the whole nation and achieve national unity in the spirit of patriotism and national independence and on the principle of promoting co-existence, co-prosperity and common interest and subordinating all to the effort for national reunification.

The work indicates ways for achieving national unity.

It calls for halting all political strife aggravating the division of the country and confrontation in the same nation, promoting understanding and trust through contacts, travels and dialogue and valuing democracy.

It also calls on the entire nation in the north, south and overseas to pool effort for national reunification.

A fresh progress has been made in the effort for the country's reunification since the publication of the work, which stands for one of the three pillars of national reunification along with the Three Principles of National Reunification and the Proposal for Founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo.

The historic June 15 Joint Declaration and October 4 Declaration were adopted and minister-level talks and other multi-faceted contacts and dialogue took place between the north and the south, with cooperation invigorated in the fields of the economy, literature and arts, public health, sports and environment.
