The governor of the island said at a memorial service that there was nowhere in the world such a case in which the whole region was suppressed as the Jeju April 3 case.

An early settlement of the case is an important primary task for winning peace and human rights, he noted.

He stressed the need for the authorities to take such relevant steps as quickly instituting the day of commemorating the uprising and properly writing its history in textbooks.

A spokesman for the Democratic Party of south Korea in a commentary that day deplored that the Jeju April 3 tragedy still remains unsettled due to the authorities' distortion of history.

He urged the authorities to discontinue distorting history and probe the truth about the massacre at that time and take a responsible option for reinstating those killed.
