Ecosystem Affected by Global Warming
Pyongyang, April 7 (KCNA) -- Global warming has become a serious problem, threatening the existence and development of humankind.

A typical example is the Amazon basin.

The region, severely affected by global warming, is emitting carbon dioxide.

Some time ago, scientists from some countries made a joint survey of the region's ecological environment. The results of the survey show that about 3 million square kilometers along the river were damaged by last year's drought and that the drought-affected plants are likely to emit some 5 billion tons of carbon dioxide.

Global warming has put many species of animals and plants on the verge of extermination.

It has resulted in considerably decreasing the number of arctic bears and deer and damaging the arctic biodiversity. Peat swamps caused by accumulation of withered plants have spread northward, bringing about a big change in the arctic ecosystem.

Scientists are of the view that if such dwindling were allowed to go on, 25 percent of the animals and plants would go out of existence by the year 2055.

A biologist said that of the animals in the world 18,000 species are on the verge of extinction.

A research team of a country predicted that global warming will become more serious in the coming decade and that unless a decisive measure to arrest carbon dioxide is taken as early as possible, a sharp rise in temperature will be seen in the mid-21st century.
