China Reiterates Its Policy Not to Become First to Use Nuclear Weapons

Beijing, April 6 (KCNA) -- The Information Office of the State Council of China in its recent white paper "China's National Defence in 2010" clarified that China has consistently maintained the policy not to become the first to use nuclear weapons in any period and under any circumstances. The white paper said that China has invariably called for a total ban and thorough elimination of nuclear weapons, adding that it has never evaded its disarmament commitment as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a signatory to the NPT but pursued an open, clear-cut and responsible nuclear policy. China recognizes the fact that the world missile defence program upsets the international strategic equilibrium and stability, is unfavorable to the world and regional security and adversely affects the nuclear disarmament process, stressed the white paper. |
