The objective of the flight was not to examine the Japan-U.S. capacity for combined air defence system and combat capability as claimed by Japanese media but to learn about radiation, he said.

It is natural for Russia to express concern about the accident at the nuclear power plant in Japan, he said, adding that military aircraft of Russia did not violate the territorial airspace of Japan and its ministry of Defense notified the Japanese military organ of the purpose of the flight.
