Guidelines Provided by Kim Il Sung for National Reunification

Pyongyang, April 19 (KCNA) -- The Korean people, who greeted the birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung (April 15), have recollected the great feats he performed for national reunification, the cause of national independence. The U.S. imperialists, after occupying the southern half of Korea by force of arms along with the end of the Second World War, were seeking to put the whole of Korea under their control. After the liberation of the country, the south of Korea schemed to have a "separate election" under the patronage of the United States and allegedly under the sponsorship of the United Nations. In order to frustrate the scheme, the President convened a joint conference of representatives of political parties and social organizations in north and south Korea and called for launching a nationwide struggle against the anti-reunification forces' moves to keep the country divided. Whenever they attempted to perpetuate the division of the country, he took realistic and scientific measures to smash their plot. Thanks to his strong sense of patriotism, moral influence and political savvy, high-level political talks were held between the north and south of Korea in Pyongyang in early May Juche 61 (1972). The President, when meeting the head of the south Korean delegation, said that national reunification should be achieved in an independent and peaceful way without the interference of outside forces and on the principle of promoting great national unity. Afterwards, the President set forth the proposal for founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo, the 10-point Programme of the Great Unity of the Whole Nation and other proposals for reunifying the country in the spirit of national independence. The guidelines he provided for the country's reunification have been carried forward successfully by General Secretary Kim Jong Il. |
