Three Books on Koryo Medicine

Pyongyang, May 17 (KCNA) -- Among the valuable heritages of the Korean nation are three medical books -- Hyangyakjipsongbang, Uibangryuchwi and Tonguibogam. 85-volume Hyangyakjipsongbang, compiled and published in three years from 1431, contains Koryo medical therapies and folk remedies. It introduces over 10,700 kinds of prescriptions for 959 kinds of diseases, 1 476 methods of acupuncture and moxibustion, many medicinal plants and their growing places, specific features and effects, and ways of their collection and use. 365-volume Uibangryuchwi was complied in 1445 and printed by mental type in 1477. The book covers all medical achievements made in the East, including Korea, until the early 15th century, with diseases divided into 90 categories. It gives details of morals and ethics in medical activities, principles of treatment, physiology of human body, origin and cause of diseases and clinical medicine. Tonguibogam was compiled by Ho Jun, who was renowned as a medical man in his twenties. Falling into five divisions, it features dissection and physiology of human body, and examination, prevention and treatment methods of all diseases. The book made a big contribution to developing the traditional Korean medicine. It was published in 1613. |
