U.S. President Barack Obama imposed Wednesday asset freezes and restrictions on financial transactions on Assad and six top aides, the statement noted.

It said the new sanctions were meant as a punishment against Syria and its people for supporting the resistant movements of Lebanese and Palestinians against Israel and the U.S.

"U.S. interference will not stop the Syrian people and the (Syrian) leadership from committing to the righteous causes of the nation," it added.
