Damage by Radiation Remains Serious in Japan
Pyongyang, May 30 (KCNA) -- Damage by radiation caused by the accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan still remains serious.

The Jiji Press of Japan, quoting the results of the survey made by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology on May 28, reported that radioactive cesium-137 of 320 Bq per kg of earth was detected on the seabed about 30 km away from the waters off Fukushima Prefecture.

Detected in addition to this was radioactive cesium-134 of 260 Bq per kg of seabed earth as well as radioactive iodine-131.

The above-said ministry said that radioactive materials several hundred times what was surveyed in ordinary times were detected on the seabed of the waters 300 km away from the power plant, adding that this is likely to affect seafood.

At a time when the contamination of sea water remains serious, the Japanese Asahi Shimbun said that 90 per cent of radioactive cesium that had dropped on the ground after its leakage from the power plant stays five cm from the surface of the ground.

In the meantime, the Tokyo Electric Power Co. announced that the level of water in the pressure vessel dropped two hours after the occurrence of the killer quake, leading to the exposure of fuel rods and one hour later the temperature sharply rose in the reactor, damaging nuclear fuel.

This confirmed the fact that the power plant found itself in an awful situation right after the occurrence of the quake.

With the season of typhoon approaching, there grows the concern that the radioactive substance that leaked from the power plant may move to the Korean Peninsula by force of typhoon.
