KCNA Commentary Assails US Forces' Crimes against Humanity

Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- There are now a series of disclosures of the facts that U.S. forces in south Korea buried defoliant and other toxic chemicals in their military bases and their vicinities several decades ago. The international community is stunned by the disclosure of the information that the U.S. massively used and buried defoliant not only in the last Vietnam War but also on the Korean Peninsula. The international community is well aware of the tragic consequences entailed by the use of defoliant through the last Vietnam War. During this war the U.S. sprayed defoliant from planes, claiming many casualties and seriously polluting environment in different areas. As a result, the affected areas turned into a barren land where neither animals nor plants can live and grudge-bearing areas causing various diseases and deaths. As a matter of fact, many young and middle-aged Koreans who had been hurled into shambles of the Vietnam War had already died of defoliant or have suffered from various diseases such as psychosomatic illness, nerve trouble, cancer and spinal trouble due to its aftereffect though several decades have passed since then and even their descendants have become deformed and crippled. The defoliant use in south Korea by the U.S. can never be viewed as accidental phenomenon in U.S. military bases. A report worked out by the U.S. Department of Defense disclosed that in 1952 the U.S. started the development of defoliant and means for its spray for the purpose of using them in the Korean War. This timed to coincide with the germ warfare launched by the U.S. while manufacturing lots of bombs containing viruses of pest, smallpox and cholera and massively dropping them over the areas of the northern part of Korea. It was against this backdrop that the U.S. desperately pushed forward the development and production of defoliant to be used in the Korean War. Late in the 1960s the U.S. forces mobilized south Korean puppet army soldiers for spraying defoliant in the Demilitarized Zone of the Military Demarcation Line. Thousands of them died and tens of thousands of south Koreans including inhabitants of the area are still suffering from incurable diseases. The U.S. forces massively buried toxic materials in different parts of south Korea. This seriously polluted many areas of south Korea and adversely affected even underground water, imposing a grave impact on the cultivation of crops and the use of drinking water. One out of 10 000 south Koreans was infected with cancer after drinking contaminated underground water. One out of the three families who drank underground water in the area, where the oil pipeline of the U.S. forces ran died of cancer and other diseases with their grudge unsettled. Defoliant victims are found everywhere in south Korea. This is another testimony to the crimes committed by the U.S. against humanity in an effort to exterminate the Korean nation and devastate the land of Korea. Unpardonable is the shameless and arrogant U.S. which has destroyed the cradle of Koreans and threatened their very existence generation after generation. |
