Pyongyang, June 12 (KCNA) -- A candlelight rally and demonstration against the Lee Myung Bak group of traitors were held in Seoul on June 10 on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the June Popular Resistance. Attending the candlelight rally were more than 50,000 people from all walks of life including 20,000 students from more than 30 universities who stayed away from classes in demand of the settlement of the registration fee issue. Speeches were made at the rally. Jo U Ri, chairman of the General Student Council of Korea University, declared that the students would have their demand for halving the registration fee met through the on-going actions just as their seniors struggled in demand of social democracy, chanting the slogan "Down with dictatorship" on streets of resistance 24 years ago. Kim Yong Hun, chairman of the Confederation of Trade Unions, recalled that the workers also turned out in the struggle for the solution to the above-said issue. Pak Won Sok, director general of the Citizens' Solidarity for Democratic Society, warned that should Lee Myung Bak persistently ignore the will of the people, more candlelight rallies will take place to put an end to the present regime. Ri Jong Hui, representative of the Democratic Labor Party, stated that Lee Myung Bak should be forced to apologize for uttering at present that he never made a commitment to halve the registration fee. Pak Ja Un, chairman of the Federation of University Students in the 21st Century, noted that the on-going actions would be an occasion of bringing about a landmark phase in the anti-"government" struggle for the solution of the registration fee issue, adding that students would keep holding high candlelight in the whole period of the "extraordinary session of the National Assembly." At the end of the rally, the participants staged a demonstration breaking through fascist police cordon. Their actions were encouraged by a lot of citizens. The demonstration went on till the dawn of next day. Meanwhile, more than 70 students staged a surprise demonstration in front of Chongwadae condemning the group of traitors for their hypocritical policy to halve the registration fee. On the same day, there were fierce actions of a large number of people in different parts of south Korea in protest against the unpopular rule of the Lee group. |
