On June 20 the military authorities committed violence against peace activists protesting the construction of a naval base on Jeju Island, injuring several of them, the speakers said.

The military base will not bring any benefit to the people but will only degrade the ecological environment as it is to be used for the U.S. war of aggression, they said, demanding an immediate halt to the construction.

The military would face bigger resistance by the people unless it makes thorough-going investigation into the recent violence and punishes those concerned, they warned.

They urged the Defense Ministry to immediately stop the construction.
