It said the Sudanese government recognizes Southern Sudan as an independent state with sovereignty from July 9 on the basis of the borderline drawn according to the final peace agreement signed between both sides.

On January 9, 2005 the Sudanese government and the "Sudanese People's Liberation Army", anti-government force in the southern part of Sudan, adopted a final peace agreement on completely terminating the more than two decade-long civil war.
