The troupe set July 17, 1971 when it gave premiere of the revolutionary opera "The Sea of Blood" (Phibada) before President Kim Il Sung as its foundation day.

Under the leadership of Kim Jong Il, the troupe adapted the immortal classic work authored by the President to revolutionary opera through new creative activities early in the 1970s.

Therefore, Korean-style revolutionary opera "The Sea of Blood" was created as a model of the Juche-based operatic arts with the introduction of verse-songs, pangchang, dance, stage arts, orchestral music and others.

The opera has so far been staged 1,600 times, evoking lively responses at home and abroad.

The troupe received Order of Kim Il Sung in recognition of its great contribution to the development of the operatic arts.

It produced many people's artistes, people's actors and actresses, merited artistes and merited actors and actresses to become well known as a famous art troupe.

In recent years it successfully re-created opera "A Dream of Red Mansions", an adaptation of old Chinese novel.
