Pyongyang, August 1 (KCNA) -- President Kim Il Sung published the famous work "Let Us Achieve the Great Unity of Our Nation" on August 1, Juche 80 (1991) to provide guidelines for bringing about a fresh upsurge in the effort for the country's reunification.

In the work the President, based on great feats and rich experience he gained in the protracted revolutionary struggle, gave a comprehensive and detailed exposition of the idea of great national unity and theoretical and practical issues concerning its implementation.

The work says great national unity is essential to the country's independent and peaceful reunification, the unity should be based on patriotism and spirit of national independence and that the nation's concord and reunification should be achieved through federation. It also calls for giving priority to common interests of the nation irrespective of difference in ideology, social system and religious belief, and developing contact, visit and dialogue and strengthening solidarity among Korean people at home and abroad.

All these ideas and theories expounded in the work serve as guidelines for the country's reunification.

The June 15 North-South Joint Declaration, adopted in the new century as a milestone for national reunification, and the October 4 Declaration, adopted for its implementation, reflect the President's idea of great national unity. They have turned the effort for realizing the nation's desire for reunification into the cause to be accomplished by the Korean nation itself.

Now those seeking confrontation among the fellow countrymen and the country's permanent division have come to an unprecedented crisis and the Koreans have become more ardent in their desire to see relations between the north and the south improved and the country reunified at an early date, with their concerted effort.

The present situation clearly proves the validity and great vitality of the idea of great national unity.
