Rodong Sinmun on Actions for Settlement of Registration Fee Issue in S. Korea

Pyongyang, August 3 (KCNA) -- Widespread actions of youth and students and citizens of south Korea for the settlement of the registration fee issue are attributable to the unpopular education policy of the conservative authorities of south Korea. Rodong Sinmun Wednesday says this in a bylined article. The government promised to halve the university registration fee to help families bring down their burdens of education expenses. This was the present chief executive's commitment during his "presidential campaign," the article says, and goes on: No sooner had he come to power than he threw away this commitment like a pair of old shoes, making registration fee jump and depriving youth and students of the opportunity of learning. A lot of south Korean students are doing hard work to earn money to pay the registration fee, subject to all sorts of humiliation. Not a few university students are toiling and moiling and girl students are subject to sexual abuses. But, the money they earn through this back-breaking labor is reportedly too meager to pay the registration fee. Therefore, not only the poor families but also middle-class families have to spend the hard-earned money to pay the registration fee. Not a few students are expelled from schools for failing to pay the yearly sky-rocketing school expenses. 200-300 students commit suicides out of despair in a year. There are also not a few parents of students who commit suicides, driven to despair after failing to pay school expenses for their children. South Korean students are now turning out in the actions to put an end to the traitorous rule of the present ruling quarters bringing misfortunes and sufferings to them and build a new society where everybody enjoys worthwhile life, given an ample opportunity of learning. |
