Pyongyang, August 10 (KCNA) -- A peace rally took place on Jeju Island on August 6 to nullify the construction of the naval base on Jeju Island under the co-sponsorship of the All-Islanders Measure Committee for Checking the Jeju Military Base of south Korea and the Kangjong Village.

Present there were opposition parties, civic and public organizations and youth and students organizations including the Democratic Labor Party, the Environment Movement Association and the Federation of University Students in the 21st Century and Kangjong villagers.

At the rally speakers said the construction of the Jeju naval base is spawning a serious issue as it is not only destroying nature but being conducted illegally.

The construction of the Jeju naval base should be totally nullified as it threatens the life of the people, they held.

They urged the military authorities and the "government" to properly understand the aspiration of the people and stop at once the construction of the base.
