Stone Sculpture of Koryo

|
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- The Korean people have a long history of stone sculpture. Their stone sculpture made a progress in the period of Koryo, an ancient state of Korea (918-1392). In Kaesong City there are some pagodas and monuments erected in the period. Typical of them is the monument belonging to the Ryongthong Temple. The monument, propped up by a turtle, is patterned with phoenix and flower on both sides. The dragon head at the ruined royal palace in Manwoldae is another excellent sculpture dating back to the Koryo period. A stone coffin unearthed in Kagok-ri, Jangphung County has a cover patterned with two fairies taking to the air, flower and bird, edged by blue dragon, white tiger, red bird and mythological turtle symbolizing the God of the North. The stone sculpture offers a glimpse of the Korean people's wisdom and talent. |
