Pyongyang, August 18 (KCNA) -- The Headquarters for Checking the Jeju Naval Base and Promoting the Jeju Participation in the August 15 Meeting for Independent Reunification of south Korea held a press conference on Jeju Island on August 14 demanding a stop to the construction of the military base.

The organization accused the military authorities of pushing forward the construction of the naval base under the pretext of the "work in pursuance of the state policy" and thereby bringing misfortune to Jeju Island.

The appearance of the naval base on Jeju Island would not only destroy natural environment but get the island involved in the U.S. moves for military hegemony, the organization warned.
