Pyongyang, August 24 (KCNA) -- The New York Times on August 19 reported about the unabated actions against the building of a naval base on Jeju Island, according to Yonhap News of south Korea. When the naval base completed on the Jeju Island, dozens of warships including submarine would be stationed there on a permanent basis and U.S. warships would also anchored there to perform their operational duties in the waters around it, the paper said. That is why inhabitants of Kangjong village and anti-war activists are carrying on unabated protest such as sit-in strike for several months, saying the base would play the role of an outpost of the U.S. forces, it noted, and continued: Anti-war sentiment of inhabitants there is particularly strong as they still remember the Korean War and Jeju April 3 incident. Earlier, the International Herald Tribune reported in detail the local inhabitants are opposed to the construction of the Jeju naval base. |
