Pyongyang, September 1 (KCNA) -- Dolmen inscribed with constellation is one of the relics indicative of the development of astronomy in ancient Korea. Some 200 dolmens of such kind have been discovered in the country. Most of them were found in Pyongyang, which was the capital of ancient Korea. More than 40 constellations of different sizes, including the Great Bear, are seen on the surface of dolmens' cover stones. About 70 dolmens with constellations on cover stones, dating back to the period of King Tangun, were discovered in Jongdong-ri, Unchon County, South Hwanghae Province. Of them four has the Great Bear and 30 have 28 constellations with holes connected with each other. It is hard to find in other countries such many constellations inscribed properly in accordance with their brightness and size in ancient time. The dolmens indicate that the Taedong River basin was a birthplace of the ancient astronomy. |
