Harvest Moon Day, Folk Holiday of Korean People

Pyongyang, September 10 (KCNA) -- The Harvest Moon Day is a traditional autumn folk holiday of the Korean people.

The moon festival enjoyed before full-dress harvest is one of the biggest folk holidays in Korea.

The first formality of the day is visiting ancestors' graves with dishes prepared with the year's new grain.

Half-moon-shaped rice cake is most popular in the holiday food.

They enjoy ssirum (Korean wrestling), handweaving, swinging and other amusements in the day.

They view the full moon in the evening. They climb mountains or sit together on straw mats in their house gardens to view the moon, hoping for good luck and estimating the year's crops.

This year's Harvest Moon Day is September 12 (August 15th of the lunar month).
