Great Buddhist Priest Sosan

Pyongyang, September 10 (KCNA) -- Great Buddhist priest Sosan was one of the patriotic generals who rendered meritorious services in the Imjin Patriotic War (1592-1598).

He, above 70, commanded thousands of priests to fight against the Japanese invaders.

He lost his parents in his childhood. He became a celebrated scholastic priest already in his thirties.

When the Imjin war broke out, the great Buddhist priest encouraged all priests throughout the country to turn out in the volunteers' struggle for the country and organized a volunteer army with priests from different temples in Phyongan Province, including the Pohyon Temple.

His army made a great contribution to defeating the Japanese invaders when they were occupying the Walled City of Pyongyang.
