Pyongyang, September 19 (KCNA) -- A monument to Taegakguksa is preserved in its origin at Ryongthong Temple in Ryonghung-dong, Kaesong City. Ryongthong Temple was built in the period of Koryo kingdom (918-1392). A monk, Ui Chon, was awarded the title of Taegakguksa by the king for his contribution to publishing the Buddhist Scriptures. The monk published 4 769 volumes of more than 1 000 kinds from 1086. A monument to his contribution was erected in 1125. The 4.5-meter-high monument is propped up by a stone turtle sculpture on a stone platform, one side being 2.35 meters long. The monument, with a hipped stone roof, is patterned with vines and phoenix. It serves as a valuable thing in studying the history and culture of Koryo, which was the first unified state of Korea. |
