Japan's True Colors Seen through "Unyo-maru" Incident
|

Pyongyang, September 20 (KCNA) -- The "Unyo-maru" incident is one of the crimes Japan committed against Korea. In May 1875, the Japanese warship "Unyo-maru" illegally entered the sea off Pusan under a brazenfaced pretext of regular voyage training. Japan thought that its saber-rattling would overpower Korea. With things going against its expectation, however, Japan launched an armed intervention in Korea. In September, it sent the ship to the sea off Kanghwa Island allegedly for a survey of sea-lane. At that time, the Korean feudal government repeatedly urged the ship to go away, but it surprisingly attacked a battery on Kanghwa Island. The ship was counterattacked soon by the island garrison. Then the ship bombarded the battery again, killing numbers of islanders. Such being the case, Japan threatened the Korean government to sign a treaty, accusing it of its hostility and demanding a compensation for the damaged ship. Japan even sent an ultimatum to the Korean government, saying it would start a war, unless its demand was met. The Korean government, pressurized by it, signed a 12-point Kanghwa Island Treaty, which marked the beginning of an invasion of Korea. The Korean people will surely make Japan pay for its crimes against them. |
