Rodong Sinmun Demands Abrogation of S. Korea-U.S. "Mutual Defense Treaty"

Pyongyang, October 1 (KCNA) -- The south Korea-U.S. "Mutual Defense Treaty" should be abrogated at once as it violates the sovereignty of the nation and blocks the cause of national reunification. Rodong Sinmun Saturday says this in a bylined article. The U.S. imperialists cooked up the treaty on October 1, 1953 by wire-pulling the south Korean authorities in a criminal bid to realize their strategy for dominating Korea. The treaty is a shackling and unequal one for aggression as it has justified the permanent presence of the U.S. forces in south Korea and the moves for a war of aggression against the DPRK, blocked the reconciliation and unity between the north and the south and reunification and imposed only submission, disgrace, misfortune and disasters upon the south Korean people, the article notes, and goes on: The treaty is a product of the reckless scheme of the aggressors and traitors to invade the DPRK. The U.S. stipulated in the treaty the "right to deploy its ground, naval and air forces in south Korea and its vicinity" and included in it the clause that "the treaty shall remain valid for an indefinite period." The U.S. thus sought to justify its forces' permanent presence in south Korea and consolidate the unchallenged position in the Korean Peninsula and the rest of Northeast Asia. On the strength of the treaty, the U.S. has so far driven the south Korean authorities into the moves for a war against the DPRK, escalating the north-south confrontation and desperately blocking the cause of peaceful reunification. As a matter of fact, the U.S. and the south Korean military warmongers are watching for a chance to ignite a war of aggression against the DPRK on the strength of this criminal treaty. There is no reason for the treaty, a leftover of the era of confrontation, to exist any longer, stresses the article. |
