Pyongyang, October 4 (KCNA) -- The adoption of the October 4 declaration in 2007 which indicates the ways for developing the north-south relations and achieving peace of the Korean Peninsula and prosperity common to the nation and its reunification was an event of landmark significance in accomplishing the cause of national reunification.

Rodong Sinmun Tuesday says this in a bylined article dedicated to the fourth anniversary of the October 4 declaration.

It says:

The October 4 declaration clarifies the practical issues of defending and actively embodying the June 15 joint declaration, definitely converting the north-south relations into those of mutual respect and trust irrespective of differing ideologies and systems, putting an end to the military relations of hostility and ensuring detente and peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Also elaborated in the declaration are principled issues arising in ending the present armistice system and building lasting peace mechanism, the issue of promoting the balanced development of the national economy and invigorating and ensuring sustained development of economic cooperation for common prosperity as well as the issue of strengthening exchanges and cooperation in social culture and humanitarian cooperation.

The declaration helped all the Koreans more dynamically advance full of confidence the movement for national reunification in the spirit of "By our nation itself" to attain a clear goal for independent reunification, peace and prosperity.

The difference in ideologies and systems can by no means be insurmountable if the national reunification issue is settled in the spirit of "By our nation itself" as clarified in the north-south joint declarations. It is because nothing can be more precious than the bonds, traditions and national identity of the homogeneous nation linked by same blood and soul.
