KCNA Commentary Calls for Earliest Possible End to U.S. Forces' Presence in S. Korea
|

Pyongyang, October 8 (KCNA) -- Some days ago, a GI committed a sexual assault against a teenage girl student in south Korea. Most of the crimes committed by the U.S. forces in south Korea are generally not known. But awesome are some cases occasionally reported. The GI crimes are on the daily increase. A total of 377 GI crimes were reported last year, 183 in 2008 and 306 in 2009. Not a single day passes without crimes in south Korea owing to the violence of the U.S. forces. They are committing all sorts of crimes wherever they go in south Korea such as murder, plunder, rape and violence and degrading of nature and environment. On the strength of the unequal "SOFA", they seriously violate sovereignty and vital rights of the south Korean people. According to it, the U.S. forces have the right to try the crimes committed by GIs "while on duty" and it is they who are entitled to judge whether a GI committed a crime "while on duty" or not. The south Korean authorities can neither appeal against any decision nor claim any damages when the U.S. forces reject any trial or declare any soldier not guilty. Some years ago, the U.S. forces declared not guilty those GIs who drove an armored car over the two girl students to death and whisked them away to the mainland, asserting "they were on duty". The U.S. forces unhesitatingly buried poisonous chemical materials including defoliant in their bases in Waegwan and Puphyong and other parts of south Korea. Not only the dignity and sovereignty of the south Korean people but also their lives and properties are infringed upon as long as there exist occupation forces in south Korea. It is necessary to put an end to the U.S. military presence and domination over south Korea at an early date. It is anachronistic that the U.S. keeps south Korea under its military occupation still now when the Cold War had already demised long ago and the withdrawal of foreign troops has become an irresistible trend of the times. |
