Kayagum, Traditional Musical Instrument of Korea

Pyongyang, October 13 (KCNA) -- Kayagum is a string instrument peculiar to the Korean nation. It was invented by Uruk, a musician of Kaya kingdom (mid-1st century-mid-6th century), in the early 6th century. So, it was called Kayagum. Kayagum has been improved as required by the modern times, from pentachord to heptachord. In old days Kayagum performed only monophony but now polyphony is available with the instrument. Kayagum is played as solo and ensemble or together with other instruments in orchestral music, instrumental ensemble and background music. |
