Pyongyang, November 30 (KCNA) -- Fish farming has made a rapid progress in the DPRK. Many fish farms have appeared throughout the country to contribute to improving the people's living standard. Among them is the fish farm managed by Kim Jong Hwan. The farm raises more than ten kinds of fish, including rainbow-trout and catfish, for servicepersons and people. General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the fish farm some time ago and expressed satisfaction over its breeding fish in a scientific and technological way. Favorable Geographical Condition of Fish Farm Kim Jong Hwan told KCNA that the farm has a spring spouting water, 400 liters per second on average in all seasons. Its temperature is 12-14 degrees centigrade. Availing itself of quality and abundant water and geographical condition favorable for fish breeding, the farm also raises fish in a stream. Rainbow-trouts are raised in nine ponds built in tiers along the stream. The ponds double other ponds of the same acreage in fish production. The fish farm covers only scores of hectares but has more than 100 ponds of different sizes for cold and hot fresh water fish. It also has several incubation ponds and feed processing facilities. Fish Farming in Scientific Way and Production of Feed with Locally Available Raw Materials The farm raises fish in a scientific and technological way, while producing feed with raw materials available in the country. The farm established a modern seed fish producing system and succeeded in raising sturgeon and catfish. The rainbow-trout raising method introduced by the farm in the stream won a prize in the national scientific and technological festival. The farm also set up a ring-shaped cyclic system involving fish farming, stockbreeding and agricultural production. The farm uses moss gathered from salt fields as feed, bringing the consumption of feed down to 60 percent. Moss contains a large amount of protein and microelements. It also mixes feed with medicinal herbs to reduce the death rate of fish. Kim Song Chol, an employee of the fish farm, said the farm has solved seed fish and feed issues crucial in fish breeding. "I feel very happy when I catch fish as big as forearm," he said. Determination to Contribute to Improving People's Diet Kim Jong Hwan said it was President Kim Il Sung's desire to fully supply fish to the people. He vowed to boost the fish production by breeding good species of fish and utilizing the acreage of the farm in a three-dimensional way as instructed by leader Kim Jong Il. Hwang Chang Gil, an official of the farm, said he will contribute to bettering the people's diet by raising fish in a scientific and intensive way. Choe Son Hae, an employee of the farm, said she will work hard to get a good knowledge about fish breeding. |
