Suppression of Progressives Censured in S. Korea
Pyongyang, January 21 (KCNA) -- The Teachers Union of south Korea made public a statement on Jan. 18 in denunciation of the authorities' repression of the progressive forces.

At dawn of Wednesday the Intelligence Service, prosecution and police searched houses of four members of the Union including its chief vice-chairman. They conducted search operation for 12 hours in those houses of no person after breaking their doors and then confiscated computer components used in teaching schoolers.

Recalling this fact, the statement said that such repression was made under accusation that they are violators of the "National Security Law" because they visited the DPRK for exchange and cooperation between teachers from the south and the north in 2003, conducted activities of support for the Solidarity for Progress and aided Korean schools in Japan.

What the Union conducted in 2003 was done under the consent of the "government," it stressed.

So there can be no reason to conduct search and confiscate private belongings by invoking the NSL, the statement said, urging the authorities to stop the suppression campaign aimed to put down the people's anti-"government" sentiment.

It declared that the Union would intensify the struggle for peace and reunification of the south and the north of Korea in solidarity with political parties and civic and social organizations in face of the authorities' suppression campaign launched with the approach of the general elections.
