Pyongyang, February 3 (KCNA) -- The south Korean Measure Council for Checking the Construction of Jeju Naval Base held a press conference on Jan. 31 demanding a total halt to the construction of the Juju naval base. The organization recalled in a press release that the naval base construction is steadily pushed forward at Kangjong village, Jeju Island, amid police cordon, posing a threat to the living of the inhabitants. The construction project is an illegal one unilaterally started by the military authorities in utter defiance of the will of the inhabitants of the area, the press release noted, and continued: The prosecution and the police arrested inhabitants, religionists and participants in the peace movement and are treating them as criminals, and the Agency for Cultural Properties and the Jeju Island side approved the construction project despite the fact that cultural relics were discovered around the construction site, and are backing the military authorities in pushing forward the project. The inhabitants in Kangjong village and the Jeju islanders who love peace and justice will strongly demand an immediate halt to the construction of the naval base and stage actions for solidarity with the people from all walks of life, it stressed. |
