"The Defense Ministry and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have to prepare jointly a realistic concept of radical and effective reform of the Ukrainian army," Yanukovych said during a presentation of new Defense Minister Dmytro Salamatin.

The reforms are aimed at creating "compact and effective" armed forces that can protect the national interests of Ukraine, the president said.

He stressed the need to increase the intensity of combat training of troops and army financing.
